The student job classification system has been established to improve salary equity by providing equal pay for equal work for all Federal Work Study and Student Temporary Wage employment on campus. The listing that follows serves as a reference for departments and offices to use in selecting and assigning appropriate Job Titles to the Federal Work Study and Student Temporary Wage position(s) they wish to advertise.
GRADE LEVELS
1. Job titles and descriptions are specified for Work Study and Temporary Wage positions. "Grade Level" refers to level of skill, experience, or education required for the job, not class (i.e. freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) level.
2. The established grade levels are as follows:
A. Grade Level I positions require little or no previous training or work experience. Minimum training is necessary to prepare the student for this level of work. Employment is generally well supervised and jobs are often of a routine nature requiring little decision making.
B. Grade Level II positions generally require previous training or experience, some degree of independent judgment, and considerable mental activity. The work may include responsibility for the safety of persons or property.
C. Grade Level III positions require a high degree of mental activity and independent judgment. The work performed involves decision making and often requires little supervision. Positions at this level must involve providing specialized services or instruction, or management responsibilities of a diverse nature. The work may provide an important link in a departmental operation. This level may require specialized training and/or certification and previous experience. This level may act as supervisor of other student employees.
AUDIO VISUAL TECHNICIAN
- Event techs are responsible for setting-up/operating/striking audio/visual equipment including sound, lighting and presentation support products.
- Events include but are not limited to movies, concerts, lectures, dances, fashion shows and special interest meetings.
- Student Technician will work closely with the customers to provide a satisfactory and successful event.
- Previous experience with audio visual equipment, special event support or show production is necessary.
BUILDING SERVICES ASSISTANT
- Maintain Union public and office spaces.
- This will include cleaning, replenishing, and removal of trash/recycling from these areas.
- Will work closely with Building Services to maintain the cleanliness of the building.
BUILDING MANGERS
- Oversees building, assists Production Teams when needed, building rounds, responsible for Building report.
- Meets each shift with Shift Managers, Opens and closes the building, opens and closes meeting rooms for customers.
- Responsible for distributing, collecting, and maintaining event evaluation sheets.
- Handles guest assistant issues as they arise.
- Assists at Information center, theater, and other areas when needed.
- Lead manager assists Professional staff with scheduling, etc.
CLERICAL WORKER I
- Includes: filing, sorting, collating, maintaining records, light office duties, running errands, giving information, and operating office machines and equipment.
CLERICAL WORKER II
- Duties includes same duties as level 1 and include general typing and proofreading records, forms, manuscripts, correspondence, dittos, and some word processing or data entry.
CLERICAL WORKER III
- Additional duties usually require judgment, previous training, experience, and/or knowledge.
- May compile records and reports or operate a variety of office machines.
- May perform any or all of the duties shown for Clerical Worker I or II.
COMPUTER ASSISTANT
- May operate/assist in the operation of computer/data processing equipment and assist in statistical tabulations.
- Operates or maintains computers or data processing equipment and writes simple programs.
- May assist students with computer programming problems, keep records, and distribute instructional material.
- Previous training or experience is necessary.
COMPUTER OPERATOR
- Responsible for operating remote job entry facility or stand-alone processor.
- Writes programs in assembler language, high-level languages, or packages.
- Assists users in accessing computing resources and debugging programs.
COMPUTER LAB ASSISTANT I
- Responsible for maintaining computer lab while open.
- Maintains printer and assists students with simple programs.
COMPUTER LAB ASSISTANT II
- Aids students in working with various terminals and languages.
- Must have knowledge of mainframe and/or various programs and be able to assist students with specific problems.
- Requires upper level student.
COMPUTER LAB ASSISTANT III
- Requires upper level or graduate computer science major with advanced knowledge of computer systems.
- Assists in training students on various micro-computers and software packages.
- May install software for staff/faculty.
GRAPHIC DESIGNERS
- Works with staff and students to design visual concepts for print and electronic media, including but not limited to logos, posters, brochures, flyers, advertisements, web content, banners and signs.
- Must be creative and self-disciplined.
- Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite 4 (including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign) and portfolio of original work required.
GREENHOUSE/GARDEN ASSISTANT
- Assist outdoor gardeners with routine horticultural maintenance, such as weeding, digging, mulching, planting, and moving rock.
- Must be comfortable working outdoors in all temperatures.
- Must be willing to perform moderately strenuous work outdoors, including weeding, mulching, digging, raking, and cutting back of plants.
INFORMATION CETNER SPECIALIST
- ICS’s will be responsible for Union and University information; they will serve as a first contact with guests in a fast paced environment.
- The information center will be responsible for maintaining the laptop check out program, union table check outs, pool table equipment inventory through a database program.
- ICS’s will be responsible for gathering and maintaining information of university and community events and resources.
- They will be required to contact the Production Teams and Building Managers by radio at all times. Students will need to answer phones, assist walk up guests with questions.
- Customer service skills a must.
INVENTORY ASSISTANT
- Assists in taking physical inventories.
- Entering update data via computer terminal.
- Picking up surplus property.
IT SUPPORT TECHNICIAN
- Responsibilities include monitoring the SUAR IT help desk system, responding to user submitted hardware and software issues, managing equipment reservations and checkouts, assisting with web site and application updates, performing desktop hardware repairs as necessary, updating desktop software, imaging Apple OS X and Microsoft Windows XP based workstations, assisting with inventory management and other duties as assigned.
LABORATORY ASSISTANT
- Helps faculty perform experiments in a specific discipline.
- Includes cleaning and care of laboratory apparatus.
- May assist in the general care of specimens.
- Collects and records data, and assists with computer analyses and report writing.
- A level 3 student may require advanced technical knowledge and specialized skills.
LIBRARY AIDE
- Duties assigned will generally be of a routine nature.
- The following duties may be performed: Bibliographic Checker, Clerk, Desk Attendant, Monitor, Shelver/Shelfreader, and Typist.
- Because of the interaction and interchange of many jobs, the Library Aide I may perform some duties that are classified at a higher level.
- Duties at Level II and/or III will be of a more skilled nature and consistently require more judgment and skills and computer skills.
LOADING DOCK ASSISTNATNS
- Employee will be responsible for assisting the Dock Manager with mail and package processing and receiving. Heavy lifting may be required.
MAIL CLERK
- Open, sort, prepare mail for department.
- Requires being able to lift up to 50lbs.
- Must be able to walk around campus.
MAINTENCE ASSISTANT
- Duties may include basic repair and painting of building, equipment, etc. Student will assist with construction/repair projects as needed. Duties as assigned. Woodworking and mechanical knowledge are desired.
MARKETING ASSISTANT
- Assists with marketing and communication efforts of SUAR marketing department.
- Write press releases, disseminate promotional materials, develop web content, manage listserves, support special events, and represent SUAR during public relations activities.
PARKING CONTROL OFFICER
- Primary responsibility would be to issue citations to vehicles in violation of UNC Charlotte parking regulations.
- Extra hours are available for officers who direct parking for special events.
- Schedule varies according to individual needs and the needs of the department.
- Require a high degree of professionalism and the ability to walk for several hours daily.
PROGRAM SERVICES ASSISTANT
- Assisting with on-site program management for programs including; checking in and greeting participants; answering questions and giving directions to room locations; assisting in room set-up; setting up tables, moving materials and AV equipment to different locations on campus, assembling notebooks and other program materials; and putting up campus informational signs.
- Assisting with on-site program management for programs including: data entry of program participants; typing program evaluations, certificates, table cards and programs; processing of any payments received from program participants.
- Additional duties may require judgment and or previous training or experience. May compile records and reports for programs reporting and maintain/manage program budget.
RECEPTIONIST
- Receives and assists visitors, supplies information, answers the telephone, keeps records, may assist with mail and do miscellaneous clerical work.
RESEARCH ASSISTANT
- Assists in various research activities including library work, transcribing of data to coding sheets, proofreading data, running errands. Performs telephone surveys. Some general office work may also be required.
- Acquires catalogues, and inventories certain materials for departmental library. Assists in pre-publication tasks, including bibliographic checking, proofreading, and indexing; performs simple research tasks under supervision of departmental faculty.
- Conducts research that involves operation of advanced high technology. Assist in all phases of research. Duties require previous training or experience and a high level of skills.
THEATER/GALLARY ATTENDANT
- Will serve as ticket takers, ushers, and caretakers of the theater before, during and after the showings.
TICKET BOX OFFICE
- Assist patrons over the phone and in person with their ticket purchases and inquiries.
- Answer questions about upcoming events and assist prospective patrons.
- Excellent communication skills, strong customer relations ability and a professional attitude are essential.
- Must be proficient with computer use.
- Will be required to handle cash sales and will be required to balance their cash drawer at the beginning and end of each shift. Student will also be required to handle credit card transactions according to University security guidelines.
- A criminal background check and training on credit card data security will be required prior to beginning work.
TUTOR
- Assists fellow students who are in need of academic tutoring.
- Teaches individual on specific subject matter in private sessions.
- Must maintain confidentiality and be current on University academic and related policies.
WEB DEVELOPER
- Assists in the design, coding, and testing of technical solutions.
- Possesses working knowledge of at least one structured programming language.
- Exhibits proficiency in HTML and one scripting language.
- Possesses basic knowledge of XML/XSL
- Understands basic relational database concepts.
- Confidently writes the four basic SQL statements.
- Possesses knowledge of various database access methods.
