Graduate
Assistants
What
is the best way to secure an assistantship?
The best
way is to continue to check with the Graduate School for listing of
available openings. You can also complete an application (found on the
Graduate School Website) and submit a copy to the Graduate School and
take other copies to various departments that you may be interested in
working with.
When is the best time to secure a Graduate Assistantship?
The best time to search for and secure an on-campus position would be,
prior to the start of the semester. In the case of assistantships, late
spring and early summer for fall positions would be the best time to search.
How
and when am I paid?
In most
cases, Graduate Assistants do not have to fill out a time sheet. The
Payroll department divides up the total stipend or salary amount, in
equal payments for the allotted time period and students are paid that
amount (minus taxes) twice a month. You can pick up your check from your
supervisor or Departmental Student Employee Coordinator; however, it is
advised that you sign up for direct deposit.
Can
I work more than one job?
Yes, but student workers are limited to 20 hours or less per week. So
please be aware of the number of hours an assistantship is requiring,
to ensure that you do not commit to work more than 20 hours a week. There
are some cases were students are not allowed to work another position,
outside of that department, check with your supervisor for specifics.
